Getting Started
Short on time? These are things you can do right now to get started.
Think
I am responsible for respecting the dignity of those I lead
I am responsible for ensuring those in my unit treat each other with respect and dignity
Say
I treat others respectfully at Michigan Medicine. I expect you to do so as well.
You are safe to tell me if you have been treated disrespectfully and I will follow-up on any disrespectful behavior switfly.
Do
Define behaviors that exemplify respect and civility in your workplace and share with your team
Engage your team members in setting norms around these behaviors
Communicate these behavioral expectations regularly and post prominently around your workplace
Look for opportunities to reinforce the expected behavior norms (i.e. huddles, performance conversations)
Model the behaviors you expect to see
Coach your team members when you see someone fail to demonstrate the behavioral expectations

Use the Civility and Respect for All: a Permit/Promote activity to identify behaviors that promote civility in your unit
Use the Defining Department Norms for Civil and Respectful Communication to co-create norms to guide collegial communication
